Carol steps up the pace.

She made the call and hung up. “That was unusual.  She suggested I go to a Saturn dealer on the road, pick out what I want and have the salesman call her. She will sell the others, then buy it and pick it up so it is there when I get home. I don’t need three cars that cost that much.”

“You know the Vue sets pretty high, maybe you want a car that is lower but there is one thing, if you need to use a wheel chair you will have space for it.”

“I hadn’t thought of that.”

“You can try one at the dealer, even take a wheelchair to see if you can get it in and if it doesn’t work you look at something else.”

“Right. Do you think some day we are on the road we could stop and look?”

“I am sure we will find a place where there is a dealer we can stop at.” Carol opened one of the scripts and handed it to her. “Let’s get some work done. Call this bedtime reading.”

Denise read the cover, “’Bottle Dirt Biking – The Debbie Michaels Story’.” She looked up at Carol. “This is our Debbie?”

“This is our Debbie. I’ve only known her for a week longer than you have. Sober she is one of the nicest people I know. She claims to be hell on wheels when she is drunk and even worse when she can’t get booze or is hung over. I will take her word for that. She doesn’t have to prove it to me. I read part of the script and I asked her if all of this was true. She said it didn’t tell half. There is a lot she is ashamed of. She spent some time in jail for punching out a cop when she was drunk. On one of her DUI court appearances she showed up drunk, gave the judge the finger and was sentenced to three days for contempt of court. Those are in the script. I can’t imagine what isn’t but she did say she flashed the judge.”

“Wow. I would have never guessed. She is so nice.”

“Sober. Yes. But drunk or hung over that is different. You know you are a really nice person sober but drunk you get nasty with everyone around you.”

She hung her head. “Am I?”

“You can be very nasty. Let’s just say that I really like the person you are when you are sober.”

“Let me try to stay that way.”

“It is a big difference.”

“What else is in there?”

“’Booze and Biking – The Susan King Story’, “One Short Leg – the Carol Dart Story”, “Cheering on one Leg – the Margie Lund Story”, “I Love Farming – The Eloise Jackson Story’, “Rolling Down the Aisle – the Janice Hall Story” for starters.”

“I hope all of them are not drunks. I would hate to have people think the only part I can do is a drunk.”

“The first three are, but then you know us. Margie lost her leg to cancer, Eloise to a farm accident and Janice to a blood clot during pregnancy. Not all amputees lost legs in drunk driving accidents.”

“You know, it almost makes me sadder to know that some of them weren’t drunks. We in some respects deserve it, but the others. They didn’t do anything to deserve it.”

“Nobody deserves it. But I agree, if it is going to happen to someone, maybe there is some justice for us. I once thought it was justice for me but then I realized how much my amputation impacted others. They didn’t deserve the pain it created for them. Let’s take another stroll down the hall and then you need to do some reading and get some sleep.”
