Sandra was just finishing lunch when her sister and their fiancées came in. The two doctors were just behind them.

“We want to do an examination before we finalize our recommendation.” They ushered out the family.

They were called back in about twenty minutes later. The doctor’s faces were grim. “We concur in the diagnosis. We are recommending above the knee amputation of both legs. We see no therapy or surgery that will make even a bit of difference.”

“When should it be done?”

“I would have recommended it two weeks after your accident.”

“Can it wait a couple days?”

“If you don’t get sicker.”

“If I do get any sicker I want you to do it right away. If not I want at most four or five days.”

“I understand.”

He explained the surgery and the outcome. She cried several times then she asked. “Will I have to use a wheelchair?”

“Some DAK’s do. Some use prosthetic legs. Most use a combination. But nearly all of the ones who want to walk are able to do it. A few even are able to do something like a run. There are DBK’s that get some really good times. DAK’s generally have a difficult time running.”

“You will find some places you will want a chair. Many amputees use a chair or crutches to when they are out. We have several amps who you can talk to if you like.”

After some more discussion the doctors left. Charles continued to hold Sandra’s hand. She looked up at him. “You can leave. I’ll not be mad.”

“Why? The girl I want is you, legs or no legs.”

“I have a couple calls to make. You can stay and listen if you like.”

She first called Samuel Bretz. “Can you get Fritz over here with the contract? I’m ready to sign.”

“Jacob Bubb gave me a paper before he left the hospital. I’m to call him if you decide and he will set up a conference with you and your doctors and a doctor who is doing some advanced amputation surgery.”

“Set it up.”

The conference was held at eight PM. Bretz, Fritz and Bubb were there when it ended just before ten. Sandra agreed to the new surgery and it was scheduled for nine Thursday morning. Her two doctors would accompany her to assist. They would be taking Sandra’s RV. Fritz offered two drivers.
