Carol has the surgery to give her more mobility.
Wednesday
Late Wednesday morning a woman came into Denise’s room and introduced herself as Barbara Nichol. Carol smiled. “Fritz told me to expect you.”
“I’ll be taking over Denise for a couple days and watching out for you.”
“Thanks.”
“I have a surprise for you.”
“What?”
“Fritz has your family on a plane, they will be here till Sunday.”
“But I can’t afford that.”
“Fritz arranged it. With the extending the tour and the surgery he felt that a visit from the family would be good. He said it was probably cheaper than the cell bill.”
“He isn’t angry about that, I have been talking to them a lot.”
“He is actually glad you are. He really wants to have you happy. He sees you as one of the people he needs to make what he is doing work. If you are happy you will do a better job.”
Carol spent the next couple hours with Denise. Barbara watched and listened.
Carol’s family came in and spent the rest of the morning with her. When they did Barbara took over the work with Denise. Just before lunch Dr. Davis came in. “Is there any reason we can’t do your surgery late today?”
“No.”
“When did you last eat or drink?”
“About ten thirty I had a drink. I haven’t had anything since.”
“Then we can do it about 4:00. I’ll get things ready. I’d rather not wait till Thursday. There is a potential patient with a circulatory problem that will make the other case if we can do it and she will be here this evening. We have time to do you today and then we have an open slot for her.”
“OK.”
Carol came back from surgery to a private room across the hall about ten thirty. Her family was with her.
Attorneys Bubb and Bretz came in as Sandra was getting ready to leave. “We have some news.”
“Donald Fritz just signed a contract with the studio you worked for. He acquired you and the unfinished film for five million dollars. It is only contingent on your signature.”
“That doesn’t sound like he got a good deal. I have no legs. The film isn’t finished.”
“He acquired the rights to all of the cast, crew and sets to finish this film and the right to make sequels as long as they star you. He has the rights to use the cast, crew and sets for two million a film plus their wages. And he has access to their distribution outlets for any film you appear in including the ones he makes.”
“Did he cut a good deal?”
“If you are able to work at all, let’s just say yes.”
“But.”
“That’s how confident Fritz is this surgery will help you and how confident you will fight and work. He just bet seven million dollars on it. “
Soon she was on the RV headed to the hospital.
