Sandra Ball has surgery.
“That’s close. There it is.”
He tightened a lock nut. “Now the next one.”
When he finished it he had her roll on her stomach and he bent her leg as far as possible. He inserted the other two rods and tightened them. With her on her stomach he lowered her leg to straight and asked her to raise it. She lifted it to past vertical. From behind there was one word, “Awesome.” It was Carol.
“Let’s try the other way.” He helped her on her back then carefully lowered her leg. “Let’s see if you can lift it.”
She got it to horizontal, held it for a couple seconds and lowered it.”
“It’s tough to hold.”
“It will be for a while. Your muscles have been assaulted by surgery. Some of them are gone. It will take time. You need to start doing ten leg lifts an hour during the day on your back and belly to build the muscle you have left. We will start to add weight in two days.”
“What about walking?”
“That is second to the leg lifts. When you walk lock the knee. The muscle isn’t strong enough yet to be safe. But you are getting there.”
He turned to leave.
Carol looked longingly. “When do I get that?”
“Soon.”
Denise looked at Carol when he left. “That ability to use the knee. It is important, isn’t it?”
“Yes. Very important. With it you are nearly as mobile as a BK and you have the advantage of the better contact, in fact better than an AK with a conventional socket. I am really looking forward to this.”
“You really don’t know how much I want to see that for you.”
Just after noon a teen was brought in with a knee that was destroyed in a motorcycle accident. It could not be saved. Two other local doctors helped with the surgery. About seven thirty Dr. Davis checked back on the other patients. They were doing fine. He went back to his office and picked up his briefcase. His wife and daughter were out of town. He would complete some of his work tonight.
