The police find the Starners but things go terribly wrong.
The detectives met the two blue and whites at David Starner’s home and knocked on the door. As they knocked the radio came alive. It was the back door team. “We have two people coming out the back door.” A few moments later the radio came alive again, “We have a man and woman in custody.”
“Just hold where you are. We have a search warrant coming.”
“The woman has an IV. She claims to need medical attention.”
“I’ll get an ambulance. We’re headed back to you.”
As they started around the corner there was a scuffle and a fusillade of shots. Anna stopped, peaked around the corner and then broke into a run around the corner and hit the radio, “Two officers down. Two suspects down.” She asked for assistance, EMT’s and at least four ambulances. David and Leah were on the ground. Doris was awkwardly kicking guns away from them. Blood was staining her right side just below the waist where she was holding it with her left hand. A second spot was growing the side of her right thigh. She stood watching the two suspects, still holding her weapon. Harry was on the ground doubled up with a belly wound.
Maria grabbed Doris’ keys and ran back to the cars for the first aid kits and took them to the back of the house. Harry appeared to be more seriously injured. He was moaning in pain. Maria tore out a large pad, opened Harry’s belt, pulled down his trousers and tried to place the pad over the upper abdominal wound. As she dressed the wounds they heard sirens. Thank God help was coming. She moved to the woman, she had three hits in the chest. She put a dressing over them, checked for weapons and moved to David. He too had chest wounds which she dressed. Maria then moved to Doris who was still standing. She tried to take Doris’ weapon. Doris refused. “I have to protect my partner.”
“You did good. Anna is watching them. We must take care of you now.” Doris handed her weapon to Maria. She helped Doris to the ground and dressed her wounds. She had taken two rounds in the right side just below her waist and one in her right thigh. Leah was standing to her right side and slightly behind when she fired the first shots. Doris turned toward her to fire just before the third shot.
