The Starners are dead but the carnage they cause has not ended.

The explosion in Liz’s left leg lifted her slightly and rotated her body to the right. The one in the left lifted her nearly eight feet. Her left stump was up near her body when her right dug into the gravel. She pitched forward and her left stump burrowed in as well.

The bike and running path would have been empty nearly any week day at this time but one of the neighbors pulled a night coverage at work and was out running with his wife and teen age daughter, Serena. They were about fifty yards behind the Davis’ when the explosions occurred. Serena cast caution aside and sprinted to Liz. Annette hesitated a second then sprinted to Ellen. Both women peeled off their shirts and wound them tightly around one of the injured legs. Ben Harris was calling for help on his cell that was always present. Serena asked for his shirt. He pulled it off, ripped off the sleeves and handed them to Serena then ripped the body of it into two pieces. The women used them to bind the stumps of Liz and Ellen’s legs.

Within minutes sirens started wailing. In less than fifteen minutes the two women were headed to the hospital. Police blocked off the area, scanned for evidence and the lab was called.

At the hospital. Dr. Kramer was called to evaluate since these were amputations. He took one look, ordered x-rays and had the hospital start preparing for the surgeries. Then he called his home. When his wife answered he told her and the three children to take off their shoes and call the police. He wanted all the shoes in the house checked for explosives before they were worn. He took off his own shoes and had them taken to x-ray. The x-rays showed nothing.

His next stop was Dr. Davis’ room. He was accompanied by two nurses. The doctor was helped into a wheelchair. “I have two patients in the ER. I need a consult. I should have the x-rays in a few minutes.

“I’m a patient. I am not able.”

“I know that and I would not ask you if I didn’t need you.”

Dr. Davis looked from one X-ray to the next and shook his head. He looked at a note on the side of each one and nodded.

“Then you concur on the amputations?”

“Three are AK’s. No, all four are.”

“The vascular said they are all AK’s.”

“Then we have four AK’s.”

Dr. Kramer turned and flopped in a chair. “I was hoping I was wrong. These X-rays are of your wife and daughter.”

“It can’t be. How?”

“They were running. There must have been explosives in their running shoes.”

“I need to see them. Get me a pair of crutches. They can’t see me in this.”

“Do you think you are ready?”

“I have to be.”

Dr. Davis spent fifteen minutes with his wife and daughter before they were taken for surgery.

Sunday

Dr. Davis spent most of the day in his wife and daughter’s room. He alternately sat in the wheelchair and tried the crutches. He had to get on his feet.

The women on the tour worked all day sorting out things, making lists of what they needed to do and have before they went back on the road.
