What was life like for the fortunate on the dawning of Artificial Life? Day 27 – Domesticity.

Orientation

This diary entry deals with the household situation in loveable Australia, the world’s most leisured nation, in 2010. Artificial Life (AL) was invented in 2010 so, a reflection of the lives of everyone in a typical, advanced civilisation in the year of AL’s birth, holds a mirror to concepts in light of this major scientific discovery.

Australian Home Life in 2010

An economic miracle enshrouded Aussie homes in 2010. Most had jobs. Australia’s main export industry was mining, probably followed by agriculture then retail and third of all hospitality.

More and more breadwinners were Australia’s women and her families, “mixed.”

Overall, Australian homes during the dawning of AL were:

·         On an income of roughly $AU50 – $AU100 thousand dollars per year

·         Divergent from the, “nuclear family,” homes were single, couples, families and alternative in complexion

·         A full basket, feeding two, from an ultra – clean supermarket cost $AU40

·         A bottle of fine wine – $AU15

A mini – portrait, of Australian domesticity in 2010, would be Mum, coming home after a hard day at work, to kiss Dad who was the happy home maker. Together they would share a peaceful and fresh dinner with good and myriad wine. If they had a family all would be well – fed and happy.

So How’s This Fit with Artificial Life?

By combining two diverse concepts – a new biotechnological discovery alongside a social portrait in an advanced nation – conclusions may be drawn:

1.    It’s just handy knowing the mores were at the time. On the dawning of the nuclear age society was all laminex and hoop – skirts, with Mum chained to a sink, with two-point-five kids and stiff Dad in his office

2.    New household cleaning product and composting AL would make the Aussie home of tomorrow less labour intensive

Conclusion

AL is sure to alter how we tend house. From cleaning up oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico to improving household cleaning, AL is going to change the way we behave. AL is here; and our homes are sure to follow.
