Chapter 20 of the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

                                                               Chapter 20

The pilot landed and Brian saw him. The pilot accepted Brian’s offer to eat the food that was provided. The pilot’s name was Kyle. Kyle told Brian how he found him. He told him that he found a signal from a transmitter. Brian understood and showed Kyle the transmitter.

While they ate Brian was telling Kyle about his extraordinary adventure. He was talking about how the plane crashed and how he was so afraid, the mosquitoes that were the worst kind he had ever met, how he had to find some shelter, the many inventions he had to come up with to find food, and finally his favorite tale, the tale of him making his best friend, fire.

Brian was talking so much that he forgot to eat. He couldn’t believe he was actually talking to another person. He was so happy. The whole time he was alone he forgot about his social life and this was the time he was trying to reclaim it.

Kyle was so happy that he had the chance to be face to face with the kid who was missing for about two months. He enjoyed Brian’s stories so much that they didn’t stop till night. Finally, when they were too tired to talk and listen they slept the whole night.

When they woke up they had something to eat and planned to leave after they ate. They had some orange juice, toast, and beef from last night. After they enjoyed the breakfast they headed to the plane. While walking to the plane he saw the whole place that he lived in. He saw all the nature that surrounded him for months. He knew he would miss the place that made him a man. He sees the bushes of berries he ate from, the fool birds, the lake, and his shelter. Brian couldn’t believe that today was the day he left it all.

Brian and Kyle arrived at the plane. Brian took one long and last look at the place he lived in for two to three months. While looking around Brian remembers his hatchet and knows that this will be his souvenir and reminder that he was here and this adventure was real.

Brian and Kyle got on the plane and flew back home. During the flight Brian hoped that this flight would succeed. The emergency package was right next to him, but Brian knew that he wouldn’t need it because right in his hand was his hatchet.

The flight succeeded. Brian was at the airport where his mother and father were waiting. His parents were so glad to see him. They hugged and kissed him and there were tears of joy. News reporters were everywhere trying to get answers from Brian. Brian ignored them all. All he wanted was to go home and sleep. Brian thanked Kyle and left to go home with his parents.

When he arrived home he took a shower and changed into new clothes. When he came out of the shower, he came into dinner. The food was all set for him and he couldn’t believe the amount of food there was. Brian then noticed that he has to live life back to the way where everything was there when he wanted it to be there. Brian was not use to this life anymore. Brian saw things differently and understood that humans were so fortunate.
