Jax and Scarlett head to Dungard.
“Are you going to tell me where we are going?” Scarlett had asked for what seemed like the hundredth time.
Jax shook his head. “I told you I had to show you something. You have to grown into a highly impatient girl.”
“I take offense to that.”
“Of course you would it was hardly meant to be a compliment.”
They were driving north as far as Scarlett could tell. The air smelt like hay and manure. She guessed they were somewhere in Romeo. Jackie’s parents owned a small farm in the area. Scarlett had gone to a few parties there before and the area looked familiar.
Jax pulled over onto the gravel shoulder. “We have arrived.”
Scarlett looked around. On one side there was a field of long grass and the other stood a corn field already cut away from harvest. “Where exactly have we arrived to?”
“Dungard.” He winked as he got out of the car.
She scrambled out after him. “Not meaning to argue but I don’t think you are right.”
He turned and grinned at her widely. “How would you know if you can’t even remember it?”
“There are no kingdoms in Michigan.” She crossed her arms.
“Well I won’t argue with you there.” He laughed. “Although you will soon enough learn Dungard can be wherever you want it to be.”
Jax started walking into the field of tall grass. Scarlett deciding it was simply best to go along with what he was doing rather than fight it any further followed. Although she could not help wishing he had picked the flattened field rather than the waist high grass.
They had walked or in Scarlett’s case stumbled about an acre before stopping. “Now what?”
“Are you ready?” Jax’s eyes were bright with excitement. “Close your eyes.”
“What? No! I swear if someone jumps out at me or if this is a trick I am going to be so angry.”
“You are by far the most irrational girl I have ever met. Very well then if you want to keep your eyes open don’t complain about the dust.”
Before Scarlett could reply a swirling wind was upon them. It felt very much like being in the eye of a storm. This was the way she was going to be brought home after so many years.
