Sue meets Janice.
Sue was taken into the home and shown to a room. Her room was on the first floor and showed signs of being recently remodeled. It was fixed with wide doors and aisles for her. The woman she had seen at the hospital, the one who put the shots in her back came into the room.
“If you can be good I don’t have to give you any more shots in the back till you have to go to the doctor.”
“And what do I have to do to be good?”
“You cannot walk. We need you to loose some muscle tone in your legs in case you have to be examined again. I will remove your braces and you will get a short exercise period every day and I will massage your legs to prevent blood clots. You will spend two hours in a device that will exercise them but you cannot exert any effort. When you are up you will have your braces locked so you look paralyzed. If you can’t do that I will have to give you shots to enforce it.”
“I can handle that. I would rather not have the shots but I will do whatever is necessary.”
“You have pretty much free run of the house. If you want to go to the pool you can be there. You can only get in if you have had a shot. Your legs must look paralyzed if you are out of the braces. I can give you a shot any time you want it. Your things from the prison will be coming tomorrow and I have some new clothes and things for you.”
“For me? Who is going to pay for them?”
“Let me explain something. You are living in the home of Jack Hull. He is worth over six hundred million. He is paying. He wants something from you. I am sure you know about it.”
“Yes.”
“When Jack wants something he is willing to pay for it and he will do so lavishly if he sees the value. Do you still want what he is offering knowing what it is like to be paralyzed?”
“I can be in prison or in a wheel chair. The chair is much better.”
“Are you sure?”
“Have you ever been in prison, afraid for your life every minute, beaten a couple times a day, sexually assaulted, stabbed?”
