Sue and Janice are in prison.
Sue sat on the floor in the corner of her cell and looked at the door. She put her head in her hands and started to cry. After a while the cellmate who had up till now said nothing but a ‘Hi’ when she came in spoke. “How long are you in for?”
“Twenty five to life.”
“Wheu. Tough time. What are you innocent of, that is what did they frame you for?”
“Embezzlement. I took about thirty thousand. They claimed it was over a million.”
“Got any of it stashed?”
“No. I had a habit. It went there.”
“Shit. I was hoping to have a rich cellmate. It would improve the neighborhood. Like usual I get a broke druggie. Wait, you said life?”
“Yes. They said I killed someone.”
“Nice. I get an axe murderer.”
“They claimed I OD’d my boyfriend. If my lawyer was any good I wouldn’t have been here more than seven years. I mean, I stole the money. Well I stole thirty thousand of it.”
“Darn. I have a weirdo on my hands. I will have to sleep with one eye open. I have a cellmate who is an axe murderer and actually admits to having committed a crime.”
Three months later Janice came home from rehab. A pair of heavy leg braces made it possible for her to stand with crutches and drag herself across the room. Most of her time was spent in a wheelchair. Her mood turned even more sour. She had a full time nurse to care for her. Over the previous two weeks she had decided to kill herself but was at a loss on how to do it. She remembered a pistol her dad had in the desk in the den. She got it and loaded it. She was going to shoot herself in the chest but the idea of the pain deterred her. She thought about a head shot but if she wasn’t successful she didn’t want to have a head injury. Her belly had little feeling. She pointed the pistol at her belly and pulled the trigger. She hadn’t expected any pain and planned to fire a couple shots but the pain on the first shot was so terrible she dropped the gun. She sat there holding her belly and screaming as the nurse came, saw her injury, called 911 and tried to slow the bleeding.
