Jan Jourge and Judd Sanders were cast members with Denise Shore in the TV series, "School Days". When they left the show they were cast in movies and were seeing success in movies that exceeded that in TV. Then a broken hydraulic line on a set scalded them with hot oil. Before they are even taken from the set the studio starts working to absolve itself of blame which will leave them without compensation.
Jan is the second of a series of stories with a cast common to the whole series. Other stories in the series include Sandra, and Karen, and then Denise, the one that brings them all together. Amanda got the FAX. She called her paralegal who was working from home. Most of her office staff did that at least three days a week. “Can you check out Jack Dennis and the law firm he works in. I want to know about him. And I want to know if he has been asking around about us. Be noisy about it. Try to be sure he knows we are checking him out. Then call him, give him our phone number, tell him we are very busy working on the case but would like to meet with him.
Ask if he could he be free Monday morning. Also tell him we need all of the information they have collected. If necessary I will file a motion to get it if they do not provide it. Tell him that a dump of the files to DVD is preferred by me and easier for him to provide. If it is available today I want you to pick it up. I don’t want to risk bumping into him, I’d rather not talk to him for a couple days. If he wants to talk to me, give him tell him I am not available.”
“Sure.”
At three in the afternoon Amanda filed a suit against the studio for three hundred million in lost earnings, a hundred million in pain and suffering and an undetermined amount for medical expenses which was being computed based on the injuries. She FAXed the information to Jack Dennis. Jack got the information just as he was about ready to leave. He looked at it and called Martz over and handed it to him.
“This is ridiculous.”
“Let’s assume the medical care is fifty, that makes the whole thing four fifty. It is realistic to believe a jury would give that much or even more.”
“That is garbage.”
“Susan, the gal over there has been looking at this. Just an hour ago she told me Amanda’s first offer would be four fifty. Harry gave her his lost earnings numbers and the medical estimates. She thinks a settlement over three fifty is about ninety nine percent in court.”
“Shit.”
“She also places a settlement of six hundred at sixty five percent, seven hundred at over thirty percent if we go to court.”
Martz walked out knowing that he must be sure the studio did not bear the brunt of the blame. Somehow he must protect the studio. His job was at stake.
