Part one of series.
I’ve been travelling for nearly six hours with no clear destination. Last I remember was when I was in the comfort of my home. I’d been doing nothing during my vacation. It occurred to me that life is full opportunities but it is up to us to take the initiative. Then, I went through my options in my head.
1. Visit a tropical island (Mexico, Jamaica, Etc.)
2. Go on a road trip
3. Stay at home
My first option was the most ideal vacation that occurred to me. Then it hit me;
“Where am I going to get the money to pay for the get-away package travel agencies offer? I’m on vacation with no pay.”
Well actually, I’m not on vacation. I’d been laid-off my 2 year career. I used to work in an auto industry, but with the recession and all, they let me go. You know, before I lost my job, my life was decent. I could go to the movies nearly every weekend, buy any new gadgets that came out, all of life’s “wants”. Not anymore, now, I could barely even pay off my credit card debts, let alone go to the movies every few weeks.
Life didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted it to be, but what can I do? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Well, other than go on a road trip in my car; which mind you is a “gift” from the company. I couldn’t refuse, besides, it was free. So now here I am on King’s highway 401/MacDonald Cartier free way. It was the route my family used to take whenever we would visit Montréal. We had friends there, but I don’t quite remember where.
I stop at a rest-stop for a while; grab a snack, go to the washroom, then hit the road again. I’m not that far away from Montréal now. I get out my car and head to the vending machines. I put my hand in my pockets to find my wallets, which wasn’t in there. I check my other pocket but it wasn’t there either. I run back to my car and started rummaging through the junk in the backseat. My wallet was nowhere to be seen. My driver’s license, cash, credit cards, everything was in there. Without it, I lost my identity, my money, and all hope of starting a new life.
