Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She and Darin talk.
Darin followed her to the table and they got something to drink. He just looked, “I didn’t know.”
“That I could sing? That I did Christian music?”
“Well. Sort of.”
“I did this when I was fourteen. I still love it.” She started to cry. “Lynda Randel, she is black?”
“Yes, why?”
“I downloaded a dozen of her songs today, the preview was a couple lines of that song.”
“I wanted to ask about one song you did, the one before “When I survey”. None of us knew it and I don’t think I have ever heard it.”
“I picked it off a web page called CCLI. It’s by Bill Brandt called “Lord You Are.” Never heard of him other than that song and another called “Promised Place”.”
“We have to look at it.”
“Take a look at both of them. This one just fit better tonight.”
Just before the last set the leader of the group came to her. “We have been asked to have you sing in the last set if you will. They want you to sing the one song again. I think it is “Lord You Are”.
She sung the song again in the last set. It was another time of quiet prayer following it.
They finished the night and she helped pack the things. Several times Darin watched her. She handled many things well with one hand and the right arm almost seemed to be in the way. They headed home. On the way she moved over against him.
“Thanks so much for tonight. I’ve really felt frustrated and tonight I felt useful helping set up and pack.”
“How is that?”
“I grew up in the church. My mom and dad helped with everything from cleaning to teaching. They helped people who were having trouble no matter what. For the last few years I go to church but there seems to be nothing I can do.”
“But you really helped.”
“Really? I didn’t do much.”
“Whatever someone else does, we don’t have to do.”
“I helped out till I got hurt. Then people seemed to not want me in places. Maybe it was me.”
“People sometimes feel uncomfortable around someone who has been hurt. Some people in my church avoided my wife when she got sick. Some of them avoided me both before and after she died. I was offended at first. As time went on I realized they just didn’t know what to do.”
