Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She recovers and begins to rebuild her career when she comes face to face with a reality. Unless she takes decisive action her life will be cut short.

He got a strange look on his face. “You don’t think she? I mean, did something?”

“What?”

“You don’t think she cut it off herself?”

“No. How could she do that? A person couldn’t cut off their own arm.”

“A hiker that got his arm caught did it.”

“But she. I mean that is a guy.” Patti couldn’t bring herself to believe it. “It would take someone with real, you know.”

“Real guts, as the guys say, real balls.” He blushed. “To do that you would have to be a strong willed person.” He smiled. “You know her better than I do. Tell me she isn’t a strong woman.”

“She is. She could do almost anything she needed to do. I’ve seen her with one arm do things I have a hard time doing with one.”

“I’ve only known her for a short time. I can’t say she could, but based on what I saw there is no way I could say she wasn’t able to do it.”

Patti looked white. “How could you cut into your own arm? I mean, cut yourself.”

“If it threatened you enough, you could. The hiker was trapped by his arm. He cut it off to get free.”

“But you would bleed.”

“Not if you put a tourniquet on it. Made it real tight. The only blood loss would be what is in the arm.”

”Say she did. How would she get to the hospital? She couldn’t drive, could she?”

“She could with one arm but if she took a bunch of pain meds she might be afraid to take a chance.  She wouldn’t risk hurting someone.”

“You are right.  She wouldn’t drive when she was taking the pain meds. I remember her waiting to take them one afternoon till she got home because she had to drive.”

“She could call a cab or have someone take her.”

“I mean, how would you call a cab and say, “I need a ride to the hospital, I just cut off my arm.” I don’t think that would work. Even if she had it in a sling the cabbie might notice. And if the cabbie saw any blood he would probably freak.”

“I am sure of one thing. If she did it, no matter how she did it she was sure she wasn’t going to die. I was with her last night and she wanted to live. It wasn’t a suicide mission.”

“I know that.”
