Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She recovers and begins to rebuild her career when she comes face to face with a reality. Unless she takes decisive action her life will be cut short.

“The chief called. We are to take charge here. You two are to head down to the precinct. The chief is headed there to talk to you.”

The younger officer just stared. “You stupid shit. It was the chief. You blew her off. Now I am in trouble with you. I ain’t taking the fall with you.” He turned to Darin. “I’m sorry. I am just the junior here. I don’t need to get into trouble.”

Darin looked at the other men. “He didn’t do anything wrong other than maybe not stopping it.” He turned back the junior officer. “I will call the chief and tell her to go real easy on you.”

“Thanks. I guess I should have.”

“Yes. You should have but you were in a bad position. I will call the chief as soon as I can.”

After they left Darin asked if he could make a call. They nodded. He dialed a number. “Hi.”

“Yes, this is Darin.”

“Yes. The men are here. Thanks.”

“They seem to be fine.”

“Thanks.”

“Can you go easy on the young guy who was here? He maybe should have done something but he was afraid to buck his partner. He did try to stop it once and the older guy wouldn’t listen. I think he is a good man, he just was put in a bad position.”

“Thanks.”

When he finished the one man reached out and shook his hand. “Thank you. Jessie, the young guy, he had some bad luck. This would have been bad for him.”

“I call it like I see it. He did try to stop it once.”

“Well, thanks for standing up for him.” He looked at Darin. “We have to ask some questions. They may have asked them but we need to start over.”

“No problem. What do you need to know?”

About ten minutes later the one officer nodded. “I think that is all. If what you are telling us is true there isn’t any case against you. We will have it checked out. I want to apologize for my fellow officer.”

“Apology not needed but accepted in the spirit it was given.”

“Thanks. We need to talk to Patti too. Do you think she can come out?”

“I’ll send her out when I go in if that is fine with you.”

“Sure. And again, sorry for the problem.”

“Please make sure the younger officer doesn’t get fried. And tell them to go easy on the other guy. I think he is a good officer. He may have just gotten off on the wrong foot today.”

“One question. How did you get the chief?”

“She was my mother in law before my wife died. She and I have worked together with DARE. That is how I met her daughter.”

Patti came out and talked to them. When she was done she came back in. The two men accompanied her. “We need to talk to Karen. Do you feel up to it? I mean we know you just had surgery.”

“I’ve been up walking. I can unless it is long.”

They asked several questions, thanked them and left.

Patti had to leave about seven thirty. Darin stayed till he saw the nurse looking at him. “I know that frustrated nurse look all too well. Visiting hours are over and I am still here. I will leave quietly.”

She laughed as he went out. She checked on Karen and left.

Karen slept the night without any pain meds. They were still giving her some prednisone but were reducing the dosage. It would take several weeks for her to be weaned off the drug.
