Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She get a replacement for her arm.

“Sure.”

She waited and watched till after the break. When she came back on the camera took a close-up of Patti. “I have someone who just called in to talk to us. I have Karen on the line. Karen, are you there?”

“Yes. Patti, thank you. I needed to just say that you have an impressive couple of women there with you. Denise, thank you for filling in for me.”

Denise smiled and nodded, then lowered her head. “I could never do this kind of work. It is really hard.”

Karen answered, “Denise, I think you could probably do almost anything you try. I think the reason you can is because you take it seriously.”

“Thanks Karen. But I am not sure.”

“And Carol, I want to thank you for being there. I have heard a lot about you and the other women in that Fritz tour. I want to commend all of you for helping raise the awareness of the danger of alcohol abuse. I do not know of anyone who has done more to help in this area except maybe the guy who founded AA.”

Carol lowered her head. “I had to get hurt, lose a leg, to learn that which I don’t think is smart.”

“I am hoping that you keep lots of other kids from going through the pain. What has happened to you has to be terribly hard.”

Denise spoke up, “What you have gone through, with all the problems with your arm has to be harder. I have been with Lou on the tour. If someone doesn’t know, she is an RV mechanic who lost an arm. It is a lot easier for me. I know that. I’m just glad I have a second chance. I heard you were having more surgery on your arm. How is that going?”

Karen didn’t want to lie. But she wasn’t sure what to say. “Well. I had surgery. It went well. I’m having therapy now. It is a lot better now than it was. Hopefully I will be back on the show soon. I want the others there to have some time on the air but I think you know, I need to get back. I have to get back to stacking Lego’s. That is my therapy for today. I’m going to hang up. Again, thanks for filling in.”

Patti followed the lead. If Karen didn’t mention the extent of the surgery, she would not. “Mentally she thought, “Stacking Legos? How?”
