Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She tells her mom how she has taken control of her life.
As soon as she was finished with the show Patti left for the hospital. When she got there Karen was stacking Legos as she said. The pile was about a foot high. She had one in her hook and was ready to place it on the stack when Patti came in. “You have it already?”
“Yes. I wanted to tell you on the air but I felt it was better to wait.”
“How? I mean, does it work?”
“Well, I do pretty well at stacking Lego’s. I hooked a bra. I pulled up my slacks and, you know, with it. Eating and writing are easier with my left hand. I can hold a book with it but turning the page is still a left hand thing. And the other good news, I think I get out tomorrow. My mom is coming tonight. I called her yesterday and told her I was in the hospital but didn’t tell her what happened.”
“She doesn’t know?”
“I told her I had surgery on my arm. She is flying in. Actually her flight landed over an hour ago. She should be here soon.”
As she said it Darin walked in followed by a woman Patti didn’t know but one look at her was enough to tell her this was Karen’s mom. She went over and hugged Karen who had quickly pulled the sheet over her arm when she saw her mom.
“Thanks mom for coming.”
“Well, you called and said you were in the hospital. You should have told me.”
“I didn’t know that I would be in till just before I came. I went to the doctor Monday, he sent me home to pack and come to the hospital. I had surgery before evening. It was a little busy and I really need you when I go home, not while I am here.”
Her mom looked around. “Are you going to introduce us?”
“I’m sorry, this is my mom, Kimberly Harris. Mom, I am sure you know my co-host, Patti Garber. And this is a friend, Darin King.”
She shook hands with Patti. “I’m really glad my daughter is working with you. I think you are a good influence on her. There are a lot of these Hollywood people I wouldn’t want her spending her time with.” She looked at Darin with somewhat of disdain. “Good to meet you Darin.” The words were there but the tone was cold.
