Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. Karen ventures out with her new arm.

They left the floor and went to the cafeteria. Karen paid for the meal. She was surprised that it was only seven dollars. She pulled out two twenty dollar bills and handed it and two of the ones she got in change back to the clerk. “Could you see that the woman this is going to gets six more meals, one each evening?”

“I can call the nurse and get a room number. I can’t give it to you.”

“I don’t want it. I just want to know she gets something to eat.”

The girl smiled. “You will never know how much something like that means to someone with a family member here.”

“I think I have an idea.”

The girl hadn’t really focused on any of them till she looked up at Karen. Her eyes went from Karen to Patti to Darin, to Kimberly, and then back across them a couple times. “I am so sorry. I have three important people here and I bet you,” she nodded to Kimberly, “you are her mom.” And I, well.”

Patti took up the statement, “You treated us like I hope you treat everyone who comes here, with dignity, with care that you serve them, with just being nice. I think that is how everyone, the truck driver and waitress or the talk show host or even the president should be treated. I think you did well.”

“But I should have done something special.”

“You did.” It was Darin. “You were you.”

“But I can’t believe it. I will have to tell my cousins I met you.” The four of them all thought she was talking about Karen and Patti. “We, the three of us, we were into drugs about four years ago. A friend invited us to a Coffee Shop and you.” She started to cry. “You sat at the keyboard, you sang, and at the end of the set you said if anyone was having problems with drugs they should just ask Jesus for help. We did that night. Someone there prayed with us. The next week we checked into a Christian rehab, all three of us have been clean since. We all have good jobs, I’m a junior in a B.A. in Nursing program. Jan will student teach in Math soon. Laura will student teach in English next year. You were just a hundred percent credible. We had all been through rehab before and gone back. Thank you.”
