Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She decides to tell the audience about her arm.

“How many of you think Karen should stay? Stand up.” The audience stood together.

“I don’t think that is all of your audience but I think they represent it. How many think Patti and Karen together are the best hosts on TV?” They stood and cheered.

She looked at Karen and then at Patti. “I think you have your answer for now.” She turned, walked to her seat and sat down.

As the audience was leaving the woman who stood came over to Karen and Patti. “Thank you for today.”

“You are very welcome.” It was Patti’s normal response. “And thank you for being honest with us.”

She addressed Patti. “You don’t remember me.” I was a skinny kid, dark hair, I moved away when I was in fifth grade.”

In one flash it came back and Patti said, “Diane Simmons.”

The woman reached up with her two hands and popped out her glass eye, then put it back. “You remembered! It’s Diane Feldman now. I couldn’t believe you were so hard on yourself. You were one who I remember treated me good. I don’t know if you remember how I lost my eye?”

“I think something, a stone from a lawn mower, I think, hit you in the eye.”

“Yes. You were one who didn’t treat me like I was defective.”

“But I had a hard time with it at times.”

“But you didn’t let it come out.”

“Thanks.”

“And so you know, I wore the eye patch for several reasons. First, I had problems with the glass eye irritating my socket. It felt almost at times like I had a stone in my eye. If I wore the patch a couple days it would get better. I also had to send the eye away one time. But I also wore it at times for a wrong reason. I wanted people to see what the world had done to me.”

Karen shook her head and hugged the woman. “I feel that way at times. I think it is normal. If you just don’t hurt others sometimes making a statement is good.”

“Thanks. I’ll try to remember that.” She hugged Patti. “You really were good to me. Do you know I haven’t had the eye patch on in public for about five years. And there are times it would have been best. I guess I need to rethink things.”

“Could you give me your name and phone number?”

“Sure.”

“I want to call you and have you and your husband out for dinner some time.”

“I think we are free tonight.”
