The next morning brought news stories about Karen and Darin in many of the shows. There was speculation about a lot of things including just what happened to her arm. There was speculation on how she could cut off the circulation without help. The “Today Show” interviewed a doctor and asked him that question.

“There are probably a hundred ways you could cut off the circulation on a healthy arm enough that in two days it would have to be amputated. I hate to go into them. Certainly anything that puts enough pressure on the artery to cut off the circulation would work. With an arm that has circulatory problems it would be very easy.”

“How would Karen have been able to do that? I mean, could someone do that with one hand or did she have help as some think?”

“That question will keep coming up. I know that men and I might add women in wartime and alone who have either had an arm cut or traumatically amputated have been able to control the bleeding which is essentially what she did so it is possible.”

“But could she have done it?”

“In the case of a trauma the big thing is for the person to act quickly before they are rendered unconscious by loss of blood. Time is of the essence of someone is hurt that way. She didn’t have that risk so she had time to just do what needed to be done.”

“But doesn’t it take strength?”

“Actually I read the police report last night. She did good planning and it looked like she got the right things to do the job. I pulled enough detail from it to see if it could be done as she stated.”

“I still am not convinced she didn’t have help.”

“To prove it to myself I got a piece of I got a piece of heavy wire and a pair of heavy vice grips. I have video of it with me. My wife is a nurse, I gave her a pair of wire cutters to cut it off as soon as we were sure it would gut off the circulation. I’m left handed so I tied my left hand to my belt just above the right pocket of my trousers. I took the wire, worked it around my arm and twisted it. I actually got the circulation cut off without using any tools. My wife immediately cut the wire. Karen could have had help. I cannot say she didn’t. But one thing for sure, she did not need help.”
