They spent time watching TV. When “Woman” came on she was at the TV watching. The show opened with Patti and Denise. After a few minutes Karen looked over at her mom. “You know I hated Denise when she was first here. I was on a talk show with her and she was terrible. Now she is such a refined and nice person.”

“Sometimes it takes something hard to make someone like that change. Remember, she lost a leg.”

“That has to be tough. Every time you have to get up you have to remember that you need crutches or your appliance or maybe a wheel chair. It has to be so hard.”

Kimberly shook her head. “I don’t understand. It has to be harder to have an arm amputated than a leg.”

“Mom. Both are hard. It is how you face it. Denise has made it almost a game. I was watching her. It is like a game, she overcomes one challenge, then the next. I realized I was starting to do that when I was on the show with her. She has been doing it longer than I have. Some day I will have to tell her how much this has been a help to me.”

As she said it she stopped. Denise was introducing someone. “I want you to meet the person who is most responsible for me getting my head on straight, or at the least one of three if you talk to her. I want you to meet a lady who is both very pretty and very smart. Carol Dart.”

Carol was wearing a pair of black shorts and a white frilly blouse. She was using a pair of blue Canadian crutches and her stump was covered by a cutoff nylon. Her makeup was flawless and her hair was awesome with just a few flecks of glitter in it.

When she came in that morning the makeup woman assigned to her took one look and asked. “Carol, let me make you up the way I am seeing you. It will be a little different than you usually look. If you don’t like it we will work on it.”

“I guess.”

About a half hour later Carol looked into the mirror. The woman there was very pretty, that she was sure of and the woman moved her head when Carol moved hers. It didn’t look quite like her but it was nice. “Do you like it?” the woman asked?
