Diane came on the show for a reason, this has been deferred as she talked about other things. Now it had to be faced.
Denise started to cry. “I’m not sure I know how hard this was for you but I think I have some idea.”
Carol took her hand, “At one time I said nobody had any idea what an amputee felt but I know you do. I am sorry I missed it.”
“Until I saw Lou and Karen here I didn’t know. And I want to right now thank every one of these women who have been on this program. I watched it and I know that my life is better because of them. My kids understand better why I am so fussy with them with their eyes. By the way, Patti, they think that you are pretty cool for a woman who is as old as their mom. Till last night they were not really sure they believed I went to school with you.”
Patti laughed. “My kids think I am older than the hills. Wait till they see that I went to school with someone who climbs towers. My son wants to be an EE.”
While they were talking Diane took off her eye patch. “I guess I can put that back in. I lose them if they are out. I have a couple, one is made to look like I do when I have been drinking overnight. Now if you want to come in close I will put it back in.” She slipped in her eye.
“Now I look more like everyone else. I can’t see any better but I look better.”
Carol piped up. “It is something like a cosmetic prosthesis. It looks good but doesn’t totally do the job. Unlike the eye, the cosmetic leg does have some function.”
