Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She begins to rebuild a career.

Karen hugged her. “Thanks. I think I am going to be fine but, well. It is good to have someone along for this first time.”

The flight and the Today show went well. They asked questions about the shooting, her injuries, how she felt. She only told them she was not planning any surgery at this time. She avoided telling that her injuries were permanent or discussing her future except in vague terms. The press took the vagueness and spun it into more than anyone would imagine. This only served to raise audiences for her subsequent appearances.

Patti met with her after the show. “You were great. Bart called, you have the Chicago appearance.”

“Great.”

“Do you want me to stay?”

“I would like you to stay till I get on the plane to Chicago. If that goes well, you head home. I know your grand kids miss you.”

“How do you know I have grandchildren?”

“I saw the pictures in your wallet. Please tell Bart I said “thanks” and there are times I would like to have someone and if it is good for you, I would like it to be you.”

Patti started to cry. “Things have been slow.  I can use the money at times.”

When the Leno show was over Karen slept till about nine. Patti wanted to help her with things but she pushed her off. “I need to see if I can do this alone. If I can’t I will need you at Chicago.”

“Sorry.”

“Patti. Please understand. I am really dealing with a lot. If I can’t learn to live on my own I will be dependent all my life. That scares me.”

“Fine. I will watch. But Bart told me if you need me I am to go with you. I am flying through Chicago and can move my flight home to later. I have a three hour layover so you have some time to make a decision.”

“Thanks.”

At Chicago Karen said good-by to Patti and headed to the hotel. She did the late night show then slept overnight and flew home about noon. Patti was at the airport waiting for her.

“Bart had me come to be sure. And he wanted me to give you something.”

“What?”

“Well. There are two things. First this.” She handed her a set of keys. “I picked up your car this morning. It is in the lot. You can drive home or I can drive you.”

“Thanks. I would like to drive. I would rather make my first trip in a quieter place. And what is the other?”

“I have some papers for you.”

“What?”

She handed a contract to Karen. “Look at this.”

Karen stared. “What?”

“You have the show. It is for six months.”

“Why? Bart seemed unsure if there was anything for me.”

“There wasn’t. But they saw you on Today. That did it.” It was a junior position on a show.
