Karen Harris is a young woman who narrowly escapes death on the freeway. She starts working again.

After six months on “Not For Women Only” the senior anchor was offered a position in her home town of Chicago and decided to move. The producers met with Karen. They had a person to fill the position but they didn’t think she had good enough name recognition and wanted to have Karen headline the show. It would mean more money but she had to sign for a year. They felt that in a year the other woman could gain the recognition to  step up if Karen wished to move on she could but they felt they needed her for a year. If she didn’t want to sign for a year they had another woman to headline but she had been holding out and they were tired of the negotiations. She was still being offered the job and if they did hire her Karen would remain as a second. The relationship she had with the previous lead was not great. Some shows had nearly open warfare between the hosts. She was uncomfortable with teaming with someone who sounded like they really didn’t want the job.

Karen was inclined to say “no” but asked one question. “Who is the woman you want for the second?”

“You probably don’t know her. Her name is Patti Garber. She came from the Las Vegas market about two years ago and the show she was on cancelled. She has been working single appearances and fill-in since.”

“Patti Garber. I know a Patti Garber but it probably isn’t her. She flew with me to New York and Chicago and she picked me up at the airport. My agent, Bart had her do it.”

“That is her. She probably didn’t have anything at the time. Bart is her agent. He sometimes uses her like that. It gives her some exposure and some money.”

Karen thought for a minute. “I want to call Bart.”

She walked out of the room, took out her cell and dialed a number. When she finished the call she dialed another number and talked for a couple minutes then came back into the room. “I want to quick read the contract, then unless there is something really bad there like doing nude scenes, I have one thing and if you can do that I will sign.”

“Just like that? You don’t want to read the whole contract?”

“Bart has seen it. He thinks it is good. I doubt I will spot anything. Just give me a minute.” She lay down the contract and started reading. She talked to herself as she read. After a couple minutes she looked up.
