Back at college, she meets new people and very new situations.

Kathy was in pain but she knew her future depended on what she did now. “My batteries went dead. Now, something went wrong with the charger. Can you get some help, maybe Gwen and Wendy? I have to think for a minute.” She bit her lip. The burning was bad. It had now changed to the feeling you got after the hot item was removed.

“Sure. Can I do anything else?”

“I need to think. I’ll let you know when you get back.”

In minutes Gwen and Wendy came back with Barb. “I need someone to get some things for me. I tried to move and it hurts too bad. In addition, I’m afraid of damaging my legs. I can’t feel anything but pain in my stumps. You understand that, don’t you?”

“Sure. What should we do?”

“Get Dr. Western on the phone, the number’s in the book. If I pass out don’t let anyone work on my legs until they talk to him. They might do something wrong and I would loose my legs. I wanted you since I know you know what that means.” Barb nodded and went to the phone and started to call. “Wendy, do you know how to check if I have pulse in my feet?”

“Sure, why?”

“It’s important to know. Please check.”

Wendy felt over her ankles and looked up, “Strong pulse, normal.”

“Keep checking and let me know if it changes. Now Gwen, you know about computers, don’t you?” Gwen was a MIS major.

“Sure.”

“On the desk, turn that one on. Open the bottom drawer, there’s several cables in it.” Wendy held up some cables. “Good, bring them here.”

Kathy sorted the ends of the cables. “Plug these into the box under the computer.

Gwen made the connections. Kathy attached the other ends to the knee points. Then she gave Gwen instructions on how to start the program. When she did, nothing happened. She had Gwen start a different program. In about ten seconds it stopped and displayed “NORMAL EOJ” on the screen. Another program was started and it listed several messages and stopped.

As the program stopped, Barb handed the phone to Kathy. “Dr. Western is on the line.”

“What happened? He asked.

Kathy described the situation.

“Are you still in pain?”

“Not in the lower legs. I don’t feel anything there. The burning sensation in the stumps is really bad. It’s almost as bad as the pain of the accident.”
