Ken comes through when it looks like nothing will work.
After a week in the hospital, she was allowed to go back to school, this time in a wheelchair. The prosthesis had been fixed and reattached but she was unable to walk without a walker. Over the weekend she returned to see Dr. Western. He was livid. “You went on a hockey field with a damaged leg. You need your head examined.”
“I’ve been thinking about it since. It was stupid.”
“I know.”
“Your leg is healing. You should get it back in about a month. By then you should be out of the cast. Tell me. Are you going to do something else stupid?”
“No. No. I learned my lesson. Laying on that field, looking at my leg on the ground next to me, I realized how stupid it was. If that had been my real leg, I may have lost it for good. I’m not going to be a hermit but I am going to act more responsibly.”
“Good. I need to talk to you. Have you and Wendy thought about permanent jobs with me?”
A smile came to her face. “Both of us?”
“Sure. I just got the papers today. We are go to start performing surgeries at the rate of one each day for the summer. We’ll be teaching other doctors and support people. One of Ken’s contacts has contracted to build the production computers. We have the first fifty but those will be gone by mid August. Can you start when you graduate?”
“I can, well, I can after the honeymoon. Dave and I are getting married after graduation. He has to start work here in a few days. Would that be OK?”
“Sure. What about Wendy?”
“I’ll have her call you. She has the same problem, an early June wedding.”
