Her legs were gone, now she sees them.

Kathy started to get up. “Not yet. I want this to be a little more controlled. He put down the leg rests on the chair. “Get the walker for her while I help her get ready to stand up.”

He lowered the leg rests on the chair and removed them. Her legs felt funny, hanging down. Actually, it felt funny feeling legs there. Joyce brought the walker and sat it in front of the chair. The doctor continued, “I don’t want you to put all of your weight on the legs at first. Use your hands and the walker to get up. Joyce and I’ll help you.”

The feeling was thrilling as she pulled herself up and felt the pressure of her weight on her feet. She stood for a few minutes and then the doctor told her to put more of her weight on her legs. When she was totally supported by her legs he allowed her to stand for a few minutes and then told her to sit down. He manipulated her legs and ankles. Everything seemed fine. “OK, now, let’s get you back up and try to walk. I want you to support some of your weight and steady yourself with the walker for now.”

Kathy pushed herself up and held on to the walker. She made a few steps and Joyce put the wheel chair behind her and she sat down. Dr. Western monitored every movement. Finally he moved the walker away and handed Kathy a pair of crutches. “You can walk as much as you like until noon if you use these. Of course, you can’t go beyond the length of the blood supply. Then, I need you back in the office. I need you to start interfacing George. You’ll be going back to college in about five weeks and you have to get his

programming done by then.” With that he turned and left.

Kathy went from one side of the room to the other until she tired of the trip. Her first steps were halting but as she got the feel of the legs the movements became smooth and graceful. She could not walk as well as she did before but she definitely was well on her way to some semblance of normalcy. Just before noon they started to get ready to put her artificial legs back. Just as they were beginning to unbolt the first leg, the phone rang. Joyce picked it up. It was Dr. Western.
