A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
Laura was tired. She had noticed she had less stamina since her surgery. Some of it was from the blood loss. Even a well-done amputation for a non-trauma patient is a bloody surgery. Some more of it was from the medications. Her body had been assaulted by massive amounts of medications, mostly the pain killers she needed to be somewhat comfortable. More had come from her lack of activity that had slowed her body processes and her lack of appetite. She pulled out a piece of paper and started making a list.
She looked at the list. They were all things she could control. She could take back some control of her life. She had to get back on track, soccer may be out, but she still had school. She had now missed more days this year than she had since the end of sixth grade. She was not sure how many. It was about nine days. She had to get back to school and catch up. If she could not get a sports scholarship she had to try for an academic one. Before she had decided to divide her efforts, to get one of each. Now the sports scholarship was out she had to concentrate on the academics. She could do nothing about this now so she marked the item, “Start when I get home.”
Eating was another thing. She remembered lunch. It looked good when they brought the tray. She took about three bites and sent the rest back. It didn’t taste good. Nothing tasted good. She knew that wasn’t true. She just didn’t feel like eating. But she knew she would not get back her strength if she didn’t start eating. She could not send back another meal without eating at least some of it. She put on the light for the nurse. She marked the item, “Do now.”
Exercise was another thing. She was accustomed to running and her morning workouts. When she finished a day she was tired. She went to sleep when she went to bed. With the present level of activity she was not sleepy so she had trouble sleeping and woke in the morning feeling tired. How could she exercise? She marked this, “Find out how to exercise.”
As she was mulling this over the nurse came in. “Yes?”
