A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
Patty stepped out the door and ran into Charlie. “Who’s paying for the Mac stuff?”
“I am, she needs it.”
He handed her three dollars. “Put this to it, she needs a lift. She is really pretty but not nearly as pretty as you are. She’s a little on the skinny side. See you at your house tomorrow night at 6:30.”
She was about to ask if he knew where she lived but somehow she knew that he did.
By the time she got to the nursing station Pam was there with the Mac order. She had a couple of minutes till she was on duty so she offered to take it to Laura. She saw Patty in the hall, “I think what you did is great, offering to go out with Charlie to get something for a patient. Do you know that almost every woman in PT has thrown herself at Charlie, some of them physically at his body. He hasn’t paid one iota of attention, he keeps telling them about this pretty blonde nurse on fourth floor.”
“Come on, he treats everyone to that line of bullshit.”
“Nope, Bill’s sister is down there, she asked me if I knew a blonde bombshell on forth floor days and I said, “no”. She wanted to know who the competition is. Now I find out it is my homely sister.”
“Thanks for the homely part, I didn’t know it was just me, I thought he was romancing every woman in the hospital.”
“They wish. Some of them fantasize going out with him. Shoot, if I weren’t married and pregnant I might be trying to get him. But Bill is so good. I’ll not take Charlie away from you.”
“Gee, thanks. I get the leavings.”
“No sis, you get what you deserve, I think this guy is one that will treat you like Bill treats me. The girls down there call him their dream husband. And they see him every day. I don’t want any less for my sister.”
“Look what Bill did to you nine months ago.” She pointed to Pam’s bulging belly.
“You think I didn’t want it?”
Patty grinned, “Hope you are still saying that after five or six hours in labor.”
“I probably will be holding something so I can smash them to show him how much it hurts.”
“Are guys that sensitive there?”
“Yep, I once got mad at him and put a vice grip on him in the shower. He went weak in the knees and almost collapsed before I realized how much I was hurting him.”
“That’s terrible.”
“I made it up to him later.” Her eyes twinkled. That is when this happened.”
Patty wanted to change the subject. “OK, how much is the Mac order?”
“Three something, forget it, was worth it to see her start to chow down.”
“Can’t do, here is three of it, Charlie told me to put it toward her meal.”
“OK, but one thing, can I tell Bill’s sister who the blonde bombshell is that has Charlie occupied?”
“I guess if it makes you feel important.”
“It does, to have my sister be the envy of PT, the lab, x-ray and the administration office, that is worth it. Remember when they were trying to break up Bill and I?”
“I only remember when Bill kept telling everyone he was dating the prettiest woman in the hospital. I was happy for you but it really hurt me. I was glad he quit making that remark.”
“You know I told him to stop saying it because I saw it hurt you?”
“No?”
“Yes.”
“Well, if it works out with Charlie, we can have them say they have the prettiest two women in the hospital. They can argue over which one is first.”
Pam hugged Patty, “See you later.”
“Thanks sis.”
Patty’s tour ended and she went home. Before she left she dropped in on Laura. The paper remnants of her Mac meal were on the tray, empty. She smiled at Patty, “How much do I owe you?”
“Nothing. Charlie paid for it. Just say thanks to Pam for bringing it in. All I did was ask.”
“Can you help me into the wheel chair? I think I can exercise there.”
“Sure.” Patty helped her make the transfer, put the right leg rest up to make her comfortable and told her to not get back to bed without help. “If you can’t do anything else, wheel out in the hall. Someone will see you there.”
She stopped at the station and told them what she had done and got on the elevator. She passed Laura’s mom and two brothers in the doorway. They were coming directly from school.
