A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
The doctor checked her stump early Saturday morning. When he finished he smiled. “Call your mom and dad. They can spring you today. Call the office Monday and make an appointment to get out the stitches. If you need anything, something isn’t right, you are not sure, call the office and we will have someone see you. No school for two weeks. Then try half days for a week. I’ll have the office give you an excuse. Take it easy this week. No shower till Thursday then only if the stitches are closed. If they are not closed by Thursday, call and come into the office. If you want to, go out during the week, don’t push yourself, use a wheelchair if you go to the mall, don’t go with someone who you can’t tell it is time to go home, and don’t try to break the mile record.”
“I promise to try.”
Shortly after the doctor left her family came for her. Her two brothers carried out her flowers. They got into one car with her dad and they pulled out toward home. Her mom had pulled her car to the pickup point. Laura was wheeled out in a chair to the car. She was about to transfer from the chair to the car when a girl came up. “Charlie needs to see you in PT before you leave.”
“Can’t this wait?”
“When Charlie wants someone, we get them. There must be something you need to go home.”
“Well, OK. He must be trying to impress that pretty blonde nurse.”
The girl took Laura’s chair and started down the hall. “What blonde nurse?”
“Patty, I think is her name. He made a special trip up with some weights for me, she agreed to go out with him tonight.”
“The blonde duo strikes again.”
“What do you mean?”
“Her sister already took the most eligible guy in town. Now she is taking number two.”
Laura shook her head. “You have it all wrong. She didn’t want to go out with him. In fact, she doesn’t like him. She is only going out to pay him for doing something nice for me.”
“I hope. I’ve tried everything to get his attention. Nothing works. I even bleached my hair when I learned he liked her. He told me I looked better with dark hair. I tried short skirts, tight pants, sweaters, nothing worked. He once said he didn’t like skinny women, I put on five pounds and that didn’t help. The more I tried, the less he paid attention.” With that they were at the PT area. Charlie was waiting for her.
