A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
She got a soda out of the refrigerator and used one crutch and her peg leg to get back to her room. She wanted to help Serena. She found Kathy Seneft’s phone number and dialed it. Maybe Kathy could go see her. Kathy answered on the second ring. “Seneft’s.”
“Kathy. This is Laura Durin.”
“Oh. Hi. How are things going?”
“Pretty well. But I got a phone call and I need some help. There is a girl in the hospital. Her right leg was amputated for cancer. Her mom called while I was at the lawyer’s and asked me to see her.”
“Do you feel physically able to go?”
“Yes. I drove the car to the lawyer’s this morning. But I don’t think I can do this, you know, what if I say something wrong? I thought maybe you could.”
“I can’t go the rest of the week. I’m going to Atlanta for a picture layout. I suggest you go. You’ll do fine and someone needs to go. Call me back later and leave a message on how it goes and leave me her phone number. I’ll call her later in the week to give her a second contact.”
“I’ll try. But what do I say?”
“Tell her how it is. You are two weeks after your amputation. You aren’t back at school yet. You drove the car. It’s the pits, don’t sugar coat it. But you are alive. Just tell her how it is.”
“Well, I’ll try.”
“You will do fine.”
“I wish I was as sure.”
“The first thing is to get dressed right. Do you remember how I was dressed?”
“Yes. But.”
“Now, do you have a pair of heels, the higher the better, bright colored-red if possible, a very short and tight skirt, and a blouse that is much too tight?”
“My mom has a pair, I mean a four inch red shoe I can wear, and I have some clothes that are too small. My dad would kill me if I dressed like that.”
“So would mine if I did it for any other reason. I just don’t let him see me. Get dressed, go down there, and do what I did. Do you have a garter belt? You’ll need one.”
“No, but I was going to get one.”
“Now is a good time and you will need it. Wear a full skirt you can take off when you get there with the short one under it. Pull a bigger blouse over the tight one. The nurses station will keep the extra clothes for you.”
