The Work Day at the Warner’s
The sky was dark but it was not raining when Laura got out of bed at six. Today was a big day. They were going to have a work day at the Warner’s. The men usually started these projects at six AM but today they couldn’t start till seven when Stella got back from the paper route. Laura got her things ready to go. She put a sneaker on her left foot and checked her crutches. She checked her back pack for what she would need today then she headed to the kitchen. She and the boys were staying at home with her mother till about noon. They would be going to the Warner’s with the food crew. Laura protested but her dad was firm. She was not needed there, she would come with her mom.
Brian was up before five. He got Ben awake enough to get him in the back of the station wagon and put a pillow under his head. Then he and Stella did the papers. They got home about 6:30 and Stella busied herself cleaning. She wanted the house to be clean if they were having guests.
At a couple minutes to seven three pickup trucks pulled up front and one backed into the driveway. Stella crutched out the door. The back of the truck was loaded with building materials.
Harry walked over.
“I’m Harry Durin. We talked earlier.”
“I thought you were going to fix the roof.”
“We are. But there is some other work that needs to be done. We have the people and we might as well do it while we are here. And I need to talk to you about something else that happened night before last.”
“What happened?”
“I called the township earlier in the week. I wanted to see if I could get you some more time to fix things up. I work with them a lot and I can usually get extensions for people who are trying to comply but need some more time. I didn’t want you to get a fine to pay while we were working. You can spend that money a lot better on something other than a fine. I asked what permit we would need to do the work today, what we will need to fix to get you into compliance and what we might need to do future work. I went in yesterday and got just about a blanket permit to do almost anything. I work with them enough that they know I stick to the rules. They are getting so much flack from the neighbors that they don’t care what we do as long as it looks better.”
