A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
When Sam got to the office at quarter to eight there was a message on the answering machine for him to call the TV station manager. He called and was told that he would be in at about ten. Lois and Terri came in just behind him. Within two hours they had moved into the room they occupied during the trial, put up a curtain in the middle and settled down. Before they were done with that their phones were ringing. Sam had told the secretary that any new business was to go to them for the first week. He needed a break. He would handle existing clients. They would handle new members of the class action suit. By noon there were four, two for each of them.
Terri looked over at Lois. “The lawyers get nine hundred thousand for each of these. Sam keeps five hundred thousand, of which we get five percent. That is twenty five thousand each, we each made fifty thousand this morning. I’m not sure I am worth that.”
“We can either put it into fancy cars and big homes and parties or we can do what Sam does. I am told he has a large investment portfolio, enough that he could drive anything he wants, buy any house he wants, and live without worrying if he didn’t work again. He drives a Ford Escort, lives in a modest home, and works hard. I also heard he gives about a quarter of a mill away each year.”
“I think I would like living like that. I mean I would like the cushion but I would like to be helping people.”
“I know I would. Only having to go to work if you wanted to and knowing you were doing something good for people. Maybe we get with Sam and see how he set up his portfolio. That seems to be the basis for it.”
Sam called the station manager at ten. He was told they wanted a lawyer to represent Melanie. He paused for a minute and the station manager responded. “If it is money, we will be paying the fee.”
“It’s not that. I want her to get the best representation. I would take this one pro-bono if I thought it was right for me to do. My workload has been brutal for a couple days.”
“We really wanted you.”
“I gathered that. I just hired two young women who worked with me in the trial to take the follow-ups from it. Let me see what they think about me taking this. Can I call you back with an answer in a half hour?”
He walked over to the room where the women were and explained the situation. They both told him to take it, they could handle the follow-ups. He smiled. This was what he wanted, them to come to the table. As he walked out he turned, “This is not a suitable office for the two of you. I don’t have time to figure out something but see if you can. A wall in here would help but that is short term. Find someone who will do it overnight so you can work. If it costs twenty thousand, fine. Then let’s see what else you can do. I would rather not move but see if you can figure out how to get us more space.”
Sam called the station manager back, he would represent Melanie. She called an hour later. She and Doris dropped in at Sam’s office to discuss her defense.
