A young female athlete breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?

The Call from the Doctor

Leah Durin was at her desk working when the phone rang. It did that nearly a hundred times a day that was a part of her job.

“This is Leah, can I help you?”

The voice on the other end of the line was not familiar. “I’m Darlene Marks, Dr. Davis’ secretary. The doctor has asked me to call you and see if we can see your daughter Laura today.”

“I’ll have to check, what time would you want to see her?”

“We have an opening at one.”

“Is there some reason for wanting to see her today? The doctor in the ER said we should call for an appointment for late this week. I looked your number up about an hour ago and didn’t get to call.”

“Based on the x-rays the doctor thinks it would be good for her to come in today if at all possible.”

“Just a minute.”

She turned to her boss. “The doctor wants to see my daughter. I need to get out of here at about twelve to get her there. Is that going to work for you?”

“We’ll make it, get going as soon as you need to.”

“I’ll wait till twelve to leave.”

She turned back to the phone. “I can have her there.”

“Good, the doctor said it would be best if she didn’t eat before coming in, in fact, I have an earlier opening, if you can make it in an hour, that is about eleven, we could take her then.”

“We’ll be there at eleven.”

She cleared the change in time with her boss, looked up the school phone number and went to the car.

She started the car and drove to the first traffic light. While waiting for the light she dialed the school. Doris, the receptionist answered the phone. “Eastside Senior High.”

“Hi, this is Leah Durin, my daughter is a student there.”

“Yes, Laura, what can I do for you.”

“She broke her leg last Friday, the doctor just called me and asked that I being her in now, they have something they want to check.”

“Let me check where she is.” She came back in a minute, “She’s in a American History class in room 244. When are you going to pick her up?”

“About fifteen minutes. I wanted to give her time to get her things.”

“I’ll have her here at the front door in fifteen minutes.”
