A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?

Dr. Abdul is taken for Surgery

At the hospital his condition was evaluated. He was running a fever and was dehydrated. His blood pressure was dangerously low. They started IV’s to replace fluids and ones with antibiotics. When they opened the bloody dressing on his stump Dr. Sikes immediately called for several units of blood, an OR and a surgical team.

It was bleeding and infected. His blood pressure was low from blood loss. The doctor put a tourniquet on the leg above the infection, about six inches above the knee, swabbed the infection for the lab and ordered the women out of the room. A hospital nurse replaced them. Within minutes the surgeon arrived. It was Dr. Ali. When Dr. Abdul saw him he went ballistic. “Get out you infidel. If you were true to Allah this would not be. You will burn with Satan. You are an infidel. You will not touch me.”

Dr. Sikes broke in. “If you don’t have surgery soon you will die.”

Dr. Ali shook his head. “They would have you lie to fake a miracle and then lie to show it as such. Is that the will of Allah, to lie to the faithful? Is Allah not able to protect that we must make a lie?”

“You speak against Allah.” Dr. Ali turned to Dr. Sikes. “See if you can find another surgeon. I will see if I can make some sense of this.”

“Dr. Davis is in surgery. He will be out in about an hour. I do not recommend we wait long. There is serious infection in the knee. It looks like gas gangrene. They tied off your femoral artery just above the knee. The other artery in the leg has a tie around it, enough to allow the tissue to die but leaking enough to kill you.”

“You lie.”

Dr. Sikes lifted his leg and held a mirror. Just above the knee there was a small incision. “They tied it through that incision. There is one like it on the dorsal. The amputation site is one large hematoma. The incision is oozing. The dressing had over 250 cc’s of fresh blood. If we don’t do something it will be a race between blood loss and gangrene for which kills you.”

“I want Dr. Jabar.”

Dr. Sikes chimed in. “He is not a surgeon. He is an intern. He cannot do this. We have surgery to do.”
