A young female athlete girl breaks her leg playing soccer. After treating the fracture the doctor sees the potential of a more serious condition and calls her back. While he is doing the tests she begins to study the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of the treatment and in doing so she encounters something disturbing. Are all the surgeries being done for this condition necessary?
“Great.”
“But there is more.”
“What.”
“He doesn’t want my brothers to feel left out. He put in funds for them for college, they are a little smaller but they will be the same amount when they start school. There is another seventy five thousand for mom and dad together. They only pay tax when they use it and it is invested. And there is fifty thousand for you and dad.”
“Wow.”
“And Stella, there are three other education funds, two seventy thousand for your boys and forty thousand for you. There is also an investment of fifty thousand for each of you and thirty five thousand for your new home.”
“But we didn’t do anything for it.”
“He thinks without Brian and the computer stuff he taught me it wouldn’t have been possible.”
As they were talking the phone rang. Laura grabbed it.
“Hello.”
When she hung up she had a smile.
“Mr. Sprenkle. Our math teacher. He got a letter from Mr. Stitt. It’s really good. He set up something for his family like he did for your family. In the letter he said everyone who helped with this got something.”
Stella looked at Laura.
“I really have some repenting to do for saying good people don’t get ahead.”
“Stella, we have all said it at times. I know I have. We just need to do our best and trust God to handle what we can’t.”
“Can I ask a question?”
“Sure.”
“Are you and Laura going to model any more?”
“I think so. The company took a chance on us when we were nobody. They have invested in us. We need to at least do enough to return that investment for them.”
“And your family has worked so hard to make things better for others. It is good to see you get something good.”
Laura hugged her. “And you have too. Your son has been the best friend I could have. And you have helped others when you could. What about the girl at the hotel that they wanted to fire.”
Stella started to cry. “I saw me in her, I knew she needed the job and we needed her if she would just do what we needed. I realized she was so afraid of doing something wrong that she wasn’t doing anything. I got her to try. When she tried she was good. When I can get her a raise I will.”
Leah smiled. “Wouldn’t it be neat if you could become manager of the hotel. They would then need a night manager. If they did, could you think of someone to do that?”
“They would never pick me for that, but give Mandi a year and she sure would be a good night manager.”
“Then you have a responsibility. Teach her. Help her. Have her ready when the time comes. That is how you do what is right for her. Helping her get ready will help you.”
