The General makes a decision on Mailee’s fate.

Kame’s looked upon the body of Peter. She remembered what Mailee said about him, what a kind descent person he was. Then she thought of her own upbringing. Her father always talked about their superiority. The Oyani way was the natural way. Would that make the Octavians unnatural? The whole argument of Oyani superiority seemed ridiculous to her in a way. Why did that girl show up now? Before Mailee, she knew what her life was all about. She knew what she believed. Now that was blown apart. Who was she now, what was she now. She wasn’t Oyani, not like she was before. She was not Octavian, not the way she should be. So what was she, she wished she knew.

“General Rocann,” a junior Oyani officer announced. “You have returned.”

“Obviously,” he grumbled. “Where’s my daughter?”

“Here, Father,” Kame’ said, running towards him. She took his hand. “I’m glad of your return.”

“I’ve heard some disturbing reports. Octavian spies.”

“Yes, Father. One is dead, a man, and the other our prisoner, a woman, a priestess to be exact.”

“A priestess?” he asked. “Kame’, don’t you know how dangerous a Octavian priestess can be?”

“I know, Father, but I thought it should be up to you to decide her fate. I know Octavian and Oyani are supposed to be enemies, but there’s something about this woman. I don’t think she means us harm. She just a tiny little thing, maybe we could just let she go.”

“After what she did to Siffin,” Veldon said. “She literally fried his brain.”

“Is this true?” the General asked.

“Yes,” Kame’s said, but only because we had killed her bodyguard. It was self-defense, Father. In her place any of us would have done the same thing.”

“But she is the enemy, and all enemies must be destroyed.”

“Please, Father, if you could just talk to her. She’s not what you think. May I speak to you alone.”

“Alright, but you will not change my mind.” Kame’ followed the General into his private tent. “Now, what is this about?”

This is a powerful chapter. I like the fact that the General spared Kame’s life when she was a baby, even though he knew she was Octavian. I admire the fact that he put his personal feelings towards Octavians aside, and took Kame into his life and into his heart, because he and his wife wanted a child to love no matter what the race, due to the fact that the General and his wife could not conceive children of their own. It shows that beneath that tough exterior, lays a man with a pure heart, even though his duty to his people must come first and foremost.
