Prologue

Neko Maid

It was a warm Spring day in the Kinara District, in a small, secluded part of Japan. A small town full of homey people, the Kinara District was the cherry blossom of all the small districts. It had no violence, no crime, and everyone obeyed the laws of Boss Maetsuji, the man who owned the district.

Boss Maetsuji lived in a large mansion at the top of the largest hill in the Kinara District. Inside, he had furnished his home with only the best pieces of furniture and oddities. Boss Maetsuji even had maids, Neko Maids.

Neko Maids were what he called the women that lived with him and worked for him in his mansion. They all had the bodies of women, but two cat-like ears protruding from the tops of their heads, making them look like cats, or as they are called in Japan, “Neko.”

The Neko Maids that lived with Boss Maetsuji were a mystery to the people of the Kinara District; no one had ever seen them before. It was told that he kept them in cells in his dungeon-like basement, that he only sent them out at night, and that he whipped them if they disobeyed him, but no one ever knew if any of these rumors were true.

Now, on this warm Spring day, a teenage boy, about nineteen years of age, was walking home from school. It was late, the sun was going down, and he knew his mother would begin to worry if he didn’t make it home soon.

His name was Daisuke Arima. He was a college student and a very studious one at that. He was kind and caring, and loved to help people as much as he could. He had black hair and hazel eyes, and wore a uniform much like that of a high school uniform. His plain brown bag was slung over his shoulder, and he walked quickly, knowing the sun would beat him.

As he rounded the corner of his usual shortcut, a back alleyway that led straight into his backyard, he noticed something unusual out of the corner of his eye. It was a girl. She lay in the middle of the alley, completely unconscious.

Daisuke hurried over to her and knelt down beside her, “Hey,” he said, gently shaking her shoulder, “hey, are you alright?”

The girl didn’t answer. Her long blonde hair fell in swirls around her pale, frail-looking body, and her little hat threatened to fall off of her head.
