Piper, Cali, and Kelly were the first ones to audition for the Playhouse.
Mark did convince his three friends to add little girls to their Nediajampat Playhouse. A month later, auditions to find ten little girls were being placed. Over a hundred kids were waiting to be auditioned. The girls were from the ages of four years old to seven years old. Each kid had an adult with them. I entered into the building with my older sister, and sat down. I wasn’t nervous at all, but I couldn’t believe how many people were in the waiting room. As I sat down and noticed a seven year old girl with long blond hair walking out of the office with pride. she looked at her mother, “Well, I did what you told me to do.”
The mother coldly answered, “Yes, you did, Piper. I am proud of you. You will definitely get a part in that playhouse.”
I was finally started getting nervous. My older sister blurted out, “Kelly, don’t be a goofball when you go into that office to do your audition.”
My family always thought I was a goofball, because I like to make funny faces. I just walked away from my sister and pretended that I ignored her. Strolling through the big crowd of people, I noticed a girl about Piper’s age, and she was sitting on her chair with her head between her knees. As I slouched down to look at her face, I asked, “Are you scared?”
The girl lifted her head, “Are you talking to me?” I quickly nodded her head. Then the girl answered, “Yes, I am scared. I don’t think they will hire me. You saw that girl with blond hair – she was pretty – I am not pretty at all.” After I frowned, the girl continued, “Look at my hair, it is short and red. I look like a boy.”
I, Kelly Sands, smiled and announced, “I look like a boy too. I always wanted long hair, but my mom won’t let my hair grow.” The girl nodded her head, and then I continued with a smile, “I guess we can be boys together.” The she finally smiled, and announced, ” I am California Barnes.” My eyes grew, and California continued, “I was named after the state, California. People call me Cali for short.”
My sister called for me to come back and sit on my chair. I quickly looked at Cali and announced, “I guess I better go. I hope to see you again.”
Cali waved at me as she watched me go back to my seat. Of course, I sat next to my sister and noticed that a girl with long ponytails was plopped in her seat by her mother. The mother growled, “You wanted to be here, so sit down and stay still.”
The girl with the long tails started to cry. I felt that I should say something, but I couldn’t help from admiring her hair being golden brown. I never saw hair that color before. Finally, a man’s voice from across the room yelled out, “Kelly Sands! May we have Kelly Sands come to the office now! Thank you!’
I jumped up before my sister said anything, and quickly walked to the door. When I stepped inside the room, I noticed four young men sitting and waiting to greet me. The four men were Mark, Gabe, Clive Mauer, and Lance Flame. Clive and Lance were co-producers of the playhouse help out with new ideas.
Mark asked me to sit next to him, and introduced himself. Gabe stared at me for a couple of minutes and blurted out, “Weren’t you on that movie, “The Land Travelers”?” I nodded my head, and Gabe continued, “I remember seeing you, and I thought you were very funny.”
Clive asked me, “So, you had some acting experience…”
“Yes, but I only did that movie”, I replied.
Gabe asked, “That’s OK… Are you willing to act and perform almost everyday in front of a lot of people?”
My gray eyes grew, and I announced loudly, “Yes, I would… I really would…”
Lance looked at me and then asked Mark, “She is very short and tiny. Do you think you want her?”
As Mark and Lance were talking to each other, I was scratching the back of my legs, because my long socks were making them very itchy. I’m sure I looked funny going in a circles, but it entertained the young men. They were laughing at me, but then Mark told me to leave the office, and they would let me know about their decision later that night.
