Part 8 of 18.
Drake and Adam left the tiny apartment and headed out to the city marketplace to buy fresh produce. Adam had impressed upon Drake the importance of fresh produce. It was the best, as well as expensive. Joe, the usual grocer, was at the stand that day, he was thirty one. The market was crowded, mostly everyday. People always flooded the market in droves searching for fresh produce, water, and trinkets. There were games of chance where caps could be lost and fortunes could be found. Joe located Adam and Drake easily.
“Hey Adam!” called Joe. The two made their way over to Joe’s produce stand.
“What’s going on Joe?” asked Adam.
“Nothin’ much, but I hear that you are ascending next month.”
“Yep.” replied Adam, proudly.
“You’re so lucky. I still have to suffer here for ten more years.” Drake stood back, shocked that two people could be so happy about going to their deaths. “So what’ll it be today?”
Drake interrupted.
“I’ll have two tomatoes.” Tomatoes had become something of Drake’s favorites. Joe laughed,
“And I’ll have sixty-two caps.” said Joe.
“Is that a lot?” asked Drake to Adam.
“Yeah it is. Keep it up and you won’t be able to afford rent again.” said Adam.
“Well, I’ll have them anyway, I don’t plan on staying here.” said Drake as he handed over his caps.
