Sandra Ball is a young actress who’s career was propelled by appearances in two spy thriller movies. As the result of an accident, she is injured, trapped, and alone in a wooded area. She is rescued but faces a shattered career and a vastly altered life. Will that life be cut short by men more dangerous than the spies she faced on the screen? Sandra is the first of a series of stories with a cast common to the whole series. Other stories in the series include Jan, Karen and Denise, the one that brings them all together.

She dozed briefly, when she woke it was ten minutes to three. She turned on the cell phone again and received three messages. The first two were out of the office messages from her fiancée Charles and her sister’s home account. They had both left without checking mail. The third was from her sister’s fiancée Edwin. “We’re coming. Calling the police on the way. Hold on. Edwin.” The message was sent at 2:38, just 13 minutes ago. For the first time she knew someone was looking for her. In fact, Edwin was at that time on the phone calling the police. It took twenty minutes to get the message to Mountain Central.

She turned on the radio to channel one and called help. More than a half hour passed with no response. She kept giving her name and that she was hurt. Finally a voice answered. “Sandra. Good to hear you. This is Paramedic Jim Sutter. I’m on Grotton Road headed south, just passed Haney’s Mill. Am I on the right road?”

He released the mic button. There was nothing for a time and then he heard her voice. “I’m on an old logging road that crosses Grotton about a mile north of Haneys. I’m East of Grotton, maybe four miles.”

Jim wheeled his four wheel pickup around in the road and headed back toward Haneys. “I’m about a mile south of Haneys headed north. I need to get on the other radio a minute.”

“OK. Please don’t leave me.”

“I’ll not. I just have to tell them where you are.” He picked up his paramedic radio. All of the emergency teams had their own radios.

“Mountain Central this is Unit 43.”

“Go ahead 43. I thought you were off duty fishing.”

Jim was in a convenience store paying for his gasoline when the call about Sandra was put out. He was now the only one within portable radio range of her. “Do we have a report on a missing or injured young woman, Sandra she said her name is.”

“I just got a report from a friend a few minutes ago. He said she is somewhere near her home on a mule. They got a cell text message. She is hurt. It says near Haney’s mill. I was going to have Jess check.”

“I’m just coming up on the logging road she says she is on. If this is her the report has the wrong location. She must be near me for me to pick up a portable, I am about five miles north of Haneys, east of Grotton about 3 miles. This is probably a hoax or a publicity stunt. She is too coherent.” As he turned the corner he zeroed the trip counter.
