Sandra Ball is a young actress who’s career was propelled by appearances in two spy thriller movies. As the result of an accident she is injured, trapped, and alone in a wooded area. She is rescued but faces a shattered career and a vastly altered life. Will that life be cut short by men more dangerous than the spies she faced on the screen? Sandra is the first of a series of stories with a cast common to the whole series.
They got to the hospital at five thirty. He handed his patient over to his wife in the ER. Sandra was taken to a treatment room where Joan Sutter took over her care. She took vitals and noted them. The doctor came in, did a quick evaluation. “We need x-rays and then get her cleaned up in case we need to do anything. I’ll be back as soon as we have the X-rays. Keep the neck brace on, the air casts on and let her on the backboard till we see the films.”
Joan wheeled her down the hall. The X-rays took nearly twenty five minutes. When they were done Joan took her back to the treatment room.
“Got to get you cleaned up. You are probably a little grimy, being in the woods since yesterday.”
“Pretty much so. I did manage to clean up a little with some rain water.”
Sandra noticed the name tag. “Sutter? As in Jim Sutter?”
“My first husband.”
“Oh. Sorry. He seemed like such a nice guy.”
“He fooled you too. Gets a girl alone in the woods and. Well you know.”
“He never was anything but a perfect gentleman. He even turned his back while I. You know.”
By now Joan was cutting off Sandra’s blouse and the remnants of her pants. “How did they get cut that way?
“I did that. I didn’t want to have to pee my pants and sit in it. I had an empty water bottle so I took the scissors and cut out the crotch so I could change my Kotex and pee into the bottle. It was a little difficult but better than sitting in wet or messed panties.”
“I wonder if our daughter would have thought of that?”
“That’s almost what he said.”
“He who.”
“Your ex.” As she said it Jim came in.
“Oops. I thought.” He stopped at the door. “I need to know what to do with the things we packed that you wanted me to hold.”
“Just lay it over there. We’re busy.”
“What’s in it can’t lay over there.”
“Why?”
“Can’t tell you. Sandra. Please tell her it can’t lay over there. She doesn’t listen to me.”
“Sorry. Mrs. Sutter. It can’t.”
Jim pulled the pistol out of the bag for Joan to see. She nodded.
“Is my fiancée here yet?”
“Yes. He is outside. I came in to ask if you wanted to see him and your sister.”
