Sandra Ball is a young actress who’s career was propelled by appearances in two spy thriller movies. As the result of an accident she is injured, trapped, and alone in a wooded area. She is rescued but faces a shattered career and a vastly altered life. Will that life be cut short by men more dangerous than the spies she faced on the screen? Sandra is the first of a series of stories with a cast common to the whole series.

“But why not here?”

“The studio lawyers have already contacted the hospital. We are only permitted to perform life sparing procedures, stabilize you and prepare you for transport. The life flight will be here in less than an hour. Nurse Sutter, we need to get the air casts on her legs.”

“How bad are my legs?”

“I am not permitted to treat them. I cannot comment.” He turned and left.

When Joan looked down Sandra was crying for the first time. “How bad are my legs?”

“I don’t know.” The statement was a lie and Joan knew well that Sandra knew it was.”

“Please. Don’t lie to me. You know. At least you know about how bad.”

“If the doctor can’t say, I can’t. Please try to understand.” Joan turned away.

“Look at me. Please don’t look away. Don’t lie to me. Would you want someone to do that to your daughter at a time like this?” Joan looked back at Sandra.

“No. I wouldn’t. But I can’t.”

“Are my legs badly hurt?” She watched Joan’s face.

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“I know broken bones take four to six weeks to heal. Will I be able to hike and run in six weeks?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will I be able to hike and run in three months?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will I be able to hike and run in six months?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will I be able to hike and run in a year?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will I be able to hike and run in three years?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will I ever be able to hike and run?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Will they have to cut my legs off?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

Sandra covered her face with her hands and sobbed for about three minutes then she asked for a tissue and cleared her face. “If that must be then so be it. Thanks for being honest.”

“I didn’t tell you anything. I could loose my license if I did.”

“I’ll not tell anyone. I don’t want you to get into trouble. Just three more questions.”

“Above the knees?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Both legs?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“You are almost certain?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

Sandra turned away for a minute then she looked back at Joan.

“Can I have your address and phone number?”

“Sure. Any reason?”

“I’d like to mail your daughter an autographed picture if you don’t mind. Give it to my fiancée. I bet with parents like you and Mr. Sutton she has a really tough time if she wants to do something wrong and she has two parents that love her.”

“Thanks. We have tried. And she has tried our patience at times.”

“I know. I had it too. My parents died in a plane crash. I know how valuable they were. You tell her I said that, to appreciate you.”

“I will. She thinks you are great. It will help.”
