“You got balls brutha. You never raced here before and you go for pinks your first time? Now that be major gonads.”
“Yeah…”
“Ok, here be how it goes down. It’s a single race, we got our guys workin’ the traffic lights so they be the colors we want them to. There will still be light traffic but you gotta work around that.”
I nodded. Can they really do that? Manipulate the lights so that they stay green for us and red for the rest of traffic? I heard that some emergency vehicles can trigger the lights in their favor. Maybe these guys got their hands on some illegal merchandise.
Monroe continued, “This is a balls out, all out, straight line drag race. Give it all you got, show no mercy cuz I know Johnny, and he won’t show you no mercy. Loose the race, loose your ride. Win the race win the money and you get some rep.”
I gulped, this made me really nervous. The money was cool but, my Camaro was really all I had.
Monroe continued to explain “Start here at this light” he pointed to the traffic light that was the 45th and State intersection. “Then, roll down and stop at the next light. That’s 39th South. The light will be red, then my girl, Elisa, will flip the switch and the light will turn green. Green means go brutha, so GO. Don’t jump the gun bro, Elisa will watch and make sure you don’t. If ya jump the light, ya loose. Then the intersection of 33rd South will be the finish line. The light will be green, my other girl Molly is on that switch, she be watchin’ for the winner.”
“o-ok, s-sounds good.” I was stuttering.
Monroe saw this and laughed “Don’t worry about it, you got guts, don’t lose ‘em now.” He patted me on the shoulder and yelled “LETS RACE!”
