The switch girl stood at the light, race number two was about to begin. I shifted my Turbo 400 transmission back into Low. I was ready. I looked at the switch girl, then at the light.
GREEN!
I stepped on it again; my car didn’t do a wheelie. It did a burnout. Bad start, but I wasn’t about to lose. My blower gulped the air up like a giant vacuum cleaner. My engine roared. I stayed in second place. The El Camino was in front, with me behind. The Mustang and the Lancer fought for third. I was gaining a little bit on the El Camino and just as I was approaching first we crossed the finish line.
WOOSH!
We zoomed by furiously. Camino in first, me in second, Mustang in third, and the Lancer Evo was eliminated. He pulled into the parking lot full of spectators and got out of his car. He had his music blasting and he raised his hands like a returning hero. The crowd cheered. At least he wasn’t a sore loser.
Race number three was about to begin. I put the car back into Low, no late starts for me this time. I looked at the switch girl. Oh man, it was Dixie. She blew me a kiss and winked. I smiled and gave her a thumbs up. She reached for the switch box and turned my attention to the light.
GREEN!
I kept control of the throttle this time. I did a wheelie. I had more traction because my tires had heated up when I did that burnout in the last race. I was in front with the Camino behind me. I looked in my rearview; I could see her intense stare. She defiantly had her game face on.
She pulled up to the side of me, she was gaining, but not fast enough to get first place. I shifted, then out of nowhere the Mustang passed me on the right and took first place.
