Makayla slowly woke from her coma like state. She glanced around the hospital room trying to figure out what happened to her. “Dad?” She called; he was the first person to come to her mind. Although, she was lost as to how she was in a hospital, she knew that her father was not far away.

“I am here daughter.” Fa said, brushing the hair back from her face.

“Baba, why I’m I here? What happened to me?” Makayla asked in Chinese.

“I do not know love, but your mother is here as well.” Fa informed.

“Ma?”

“Thank God you are awake.” Coretta spoke stepping into the room.

“I will go get the doctor.” Fa announced as he left the room.

“Kay, do you remember anything?” Coretta asked.

Suddenly flashes of her screaming for Neil flooded her mind. Coretta could see that Makayla was remembering something and became excited. “What is it Kay what do you remember?”

Makayla looked back up at her mother. As quickly as the images came, they left. “I…I don’t know. What’s wrong with me?”

“Mrs. Boswell, how are you feeling?” the emergency room doctor asked as he entered the room.

“Okay I guess?” Makayla muttered.

“Are you feeling any pain?” He asked as he pulled back the sheets and looked at the injuries on her legs and thighs.  He paused for a moment at the wound on her shoulder. “These look like teeth marks, but…not human.” He mumbled looking over the deep puncture wounds on her shoulder. “Do you remember anything?” He asked, now flashing a light in her eyes.

“Not much.” Makayla mumbled.

“It’s okay don’t force it. I’m doctor Kamal Rai. There are some officers who would like to speak with you.” Dr.Rai informed. “Are you ready to speak with them?”

“Yes, I guess?” Makayla whispered.

Dr. Rai looked over her one more time, hesitating to leave her side. He smiled at her mother as he stepped away and called in the two officers.

“Hello Mrs. Boswell, how are you feeling?” One of the officers greeted.

“Okay, I guess,” she smiled sheepishly.

“You gave us all quite a scare; they had to revive you twice.” The second officer informed.

“Twice?” Makayla repeated, attempting to sit up.

“No, please relax.” Dr. Rai instructed maneuvering through the officers to reach Makayla.

She relaxed as the doctor fixed her sheets and propped her pillow. “How do you feel?” He questioned.

“I’m good, thank you.” She answered.

“Coretta, come let’s give them privacy to talk.” Fa told his wife as he gently nudged her away from Makayla’s side.

“We will be right outside.” Coretta informed Makayla.

“Okay,” she nodded.

As her parents left, Dr. Rai followed leaving the police officers alone with Makayla. He stood outside discussing Makayla’s condition with her heartbroken parents. Fa listened closely, as the doctor explained why Makayla flat lined twice.

“Makayla has been through hell. Her injuries are no longer life threatening, she has fractured ribs. And there are bites on her abdomen and shoulder. Don’t worry pictures and evidence has been collected. A rape kit was performed and we will have most of her results in soon.”

The doctor shifted his weight and slowly rubbed the back of his neck. His long silence became painfully loud, as he searched his mind for answers to the questions that still plagued him.  “She is still in shock and this could be why she has flat lined. Not enough blood is reaching her vital organs. Right now she seems stable but Makayla lost her will to live…twice. She is going to need as much support as possible to get her through this.”

“This is all my fault. I was too hard on her.” Fa complained as he turned away placing his hands on his hips.

“Fa, you were a good father.” Coretta hugged her husband. “We haven’t lost her.”

“That’s exactly right. She is alive for whatever reason. God sent her back…Twice. I have to go, but I will be back to check on her. Take care of your daughter.” Dr. Rai said walking away.

“Thank you.” They both replied.
