Chapter 2

After they reached the camp they were all very tired and decided to take a little nap. Kellie and Potnie slept a little longer and awoke to their parents preparing dinner. Is there anything better then franks and beans? It just seemed to taste better than it does at home. They also had potato salad, chips and their favorite, watermelon. After dinner the parents sat around the campfire talking and the girls asked if they could go down by the stream for a little bit. They said it was ok since they could see the stream from the camp and told the girls not to lose site of the camp while they were down by the stream. The stream was nice and cool and not very big. Before too long the two dads came over to soak their feet in the cool stream and spend some time with the girls.

It was getting dark now so they decided to sit by the fire and roast some marshmallows and of coarse there was chocolate and crackers too. Everything you need for a perfect camping trip. It was getting late and the parents decided to go to sleep. Kellie asked if they could stay up a little longer and sit around the fire since they slept longer and weren’t very tired. They said it was ok but to be sure and put the fire out before crawling into bed.

They sat around the fire and talked and laughed and were having a good time when they heard a trig snap out in the darkness. They both turned to each other and at the same time said: “did you here that?” “I wonder if somebody is out there” said Kellie. “I’m sure it’s just a deer or something; you know the woods are full of them.” They soon forgot about the noise they had heard and began to tell scary stories. Then suddenly they heard another trig snap and quickly turned and looked out into the blackness in the direction of the noise. They quietly listened but could not hear anything else. They began to feel a little uneasy and they just got this feeling that somebody was watching them. Sensing that Kellie was getting a little scared Potnie just started talking to try and ease both of their minds.

“Kellie it’s nothing, it’s just an animal or something.” “What do you mean or something what else could it be besides an animal. You don’t think there’s a person out there do you?” “No” said Potnie, “What do you think the Grand Canyon will be like?” Potnie was trying to change the subject because she knew Kellie was pretty scared. As a matter of fact she was pretty scared herself. “Oh, I’m sure it’s quite spectacular” said Kellie as she turned and looked out into the darkness. Then Potnie said: “Do you remember that time we went to the library and we looked at that book about the Grand Canyon?” “Oh yeah, those were some pretty amazing pictures. I can’t imagine what it would be like to see in person.” “Yeah, but we’re going to find out” said Potnie. They heard another twig snap. Kellie jumped up and stretched her arms out and started yawning. “My I’m getting awful sleepy, what do you say we get some sleep?” They looked out at the darkness in the direction of the twig they heard snap but couldn’t see anything, when you looked out past the light from the fire it was like a big black wall you just couldn’t see anything.
