Young readers – Fiction, two young girls meet Elwynn who has a time machine and takes them on an adventure of a lifetime. Back to witness the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Then Elwynn jumped up and said “Holy mackerel!” Then the girls jumped up and said “what?” He said “I just had a thought, we must go back to the time machine, are you girls ready to walk?” “Well what is it?” they asked. “I have all these built in redundancies but I’m the only one who knows how to work ole Betsy”. “Betsy?” said Potnie. “Yes that’s an affectionate name that I have given the time machine.” “Oh I see that’s pretty neat” said Potnie. Then Kellie said: “So what are you going to do?” “Well I am going to show you girls how to run Betsy.” “You are?” they said in unison. “Yes, I wish I had thought about it earlier. Well better late than never. I mean what if something happened to me? I mean it’s not like something will happen to me but what if something did happen to me it’s better to cover all your bases, ya know what I mean?” “Yes, quite” said Potnie; and they all just laughed.

After I nice stretch of the legs they made it back to Betsy. Elwynn didn’t even have to use the tracker, he remembered where he stashed the time machine, I mean Betsy. He got it all uncovered and had the girls stand on either side of him and he went through the process of how to operate the time machine. After all it wasn’t all that complicated and the girls were wonderful students. He went over and over it until he was sure they could use it if they had to.

“Well I’m satisfied that you girls could use old Betsy if you had to. Let’s cover her back up and try our little hike again.” After Elwynn was satisfied that Betsy was well hidden they were off. Elwynn pulled out his pocket watch and looked at the time. It had been about three hours since they first arrived but he thought they would get to town at a reasonably good time.

They pushed on for a good hour and the girls asked if they could stop and take a break. “Well of course, I’m sorry I’ve been pushing you so hard I just wish I had remembered to teach you about Betsy before.” “It’s ok Elwynn we’ll be fine,” said Kellie. “Ah thanks” said Elwynn as he gave the girls a hug.

They sat and rested a good fifteen minutes or so and then Elwynn said: “well are you ready to get going again?” ‘Yes” they said. “All right, let’s do it.” They continued on, walking talking and taking in the sights. They walked what seemed to be a long ways, they went up this hill and when they got to the top as if it sprang out of nowhere there was this city.
