Chapter 5
It was magnificent. It seemed so different from the cities of today. I guess that’s what made it so magnificent. They just stood there a while taking it all in. “Well should we head down into the city?” asked Elwynn. “I guess so” said Kellie. So down they went into the city and just took in the sites.
Everybody that passed by would say hi, or tip their hat or nod. Some sort of acknowledgement that they were there. They were just amazed at how friendly everybody was. People just seemed to be so different but in a good way. By this time they started to get a little hungry. So they asked a passer by where a good place to eat was. He pointed to the local café; they thanked him and went to go eat.
They were a little curious about what the food would taste like and what kind of food it would be. They settled on stew, thought that might be a good safe choice; and they were right, it was delicious. The café was quite a bit different from what you see today. Like the whole construction of it, the wood floor and the table and chairs. Not nearly as comfortable as say a booth in restaurants of our time. But comfortable enough to allow them to sit and eat.
The people looked so different from what they were used to. Like the way they were dressed and how they didn’t seem to be as neatly groomed as people are today. There’s a lot to be said for modern conveniences like running water, washers and dryers, microwaves and electricity. It was quite different but also exciting all at the same time. The girls didn’t talk much at first. Their minds were just racing with thoughts and questions. Then Kellie said: “What should we do after our meal?” “Well perhaps we should go for a walk and see where the congressional building is” said Elwynn. “Sounds good” said the girls.
They really didn’t know what else to call the building where the continental congress met. But it seemed appropriate to call it that. They also wondered if it would be open to the public or if only members of congress would be permitted in the building. As you know today people can come and watch congress while it is in session. So what would congress have been like 230 plus years in the past? Would they be able to watch history unfold the easy way or the hard way? Like would they have to sneak in or would they be allowed to watch. One way or another they were going to witness this amazing event. After all they didn’t come all this way for nothing.
